    If the second term in an arithmetic sequence is 4, and the tenth term is 15, what is the first term in the sequence?

    A) 1.18
    B) 1.27
    C) 1.38
    D) 2.63
    E) 2.75

    r: Common Difference
    a2 = 4 = a1 + (2 - 1)·r = a1 + r....(I)
    a10 = 15 = a1 + (10 - 1)·r = a1 + 9r....(II)
    Multiplying the equation (I) by -9 and adding to (II); -8a1 = -21 ⇒ a1 = 21 / 8 = 2.625 ≈ 2.63.
